Summer campsWhat is a summer camp?Summer camp in USA is an institution, just like baseball, burgers and Coca Cola. Every single camp has its own traditions and you can find camps with almost all the themes you can think of. Some are traditional YMCA camps, camps for scouts, religious camps and camps for disabled people. Some camps focus on a single activity, e.g. tennis camps, soccer camps etc. Even NASA has its own camp for kids and the list to be accepted to this camp is very long.International counselors create a special atmosphereAll these different camps are every year applying for staff to take the vacant positions. If it is an overnight camp that is looking for staff, then the summer is when they are using the most staff. The camps are mostly open all year, but the rest of the time they are used by schools, conferences and different meetings. International counselors are used in all positions at a camp – in the kitchen, as a programme staff (responsible for a single activity), maintenance staff or as most of our applicants as counselors. The camps want to have counselors with different cultural backgrounds but with good English language skills. They can be a part of giving the kids an insight in other countries and cultures. At the same time the international counselors can be part of creating a unique atmosphere in the camp.Scandinavians have an advantageDUTA promotes all kind of positions for Scandinavian applicants. We are looking for ordinary counselors (the most common), kitchen and maintenance staff and also specialists with special skills within one or two of the relevant areas. DUTA has a very good reputation within the camp society in the USA. The Americans appreciate the Scandinavian attitude to work, the humour and our good English language skills and some camps are very eager to have applicants from Scandinavia. Of course some skills are more sought after than others. If you have a lifesaver exam, if you are a swimming instructor, sailing instructor, a rock climber or if you can do horseback riding you have a great chance of being picked for the job.It is not a must that you have one of these specified skills, but will be an advantage as an applicant. But during the last ten years we have not had any of our applicants who has been denied a job in a camp. So as long as you like to work with kids and you have some English skills, you should have a great opportunity of getting a great summer at a camp in the USA. |
