Different types of campsOvernight campMost of the American camps are overnight camps or resident camps. In these camps you live in a small cottage, a tent or some other building together with a group of kids. Most camps are situated in the mountains on the plains or close to forests or water. In an overnight camp you work 24 hours a day. Of course there will be periods where you will have some time off, but compared to a day camp you will have to work much harder in and overnight camp. That will also help you to get a much closer relationship to the kids that you are responsible for. At some camps you will have some of the same kids for up to eight weeks in a row.Day campIn a day camp, the kids, who are mostly between 7 and 16 years old, arrive at the campsite in the morning and is picked up again in the late afternoon. Most of the time you will work with a group of 10-20 kids where you and two or three other counselors are responsible for making activities. The international counselors will either stay with a host family or stay at the camp (e.g. if the camp is also an overnight camp). A day camp gives you more opportunities of having some time off for shopping, going to the movies, relaxing and watch TV.Religious campsReligious camps are run by Christian or Jewish organisations. It is possible to work in one of these camps without being very religious yourself. Mostly it is about promoting the positive values in the different religions.Girl scoutsThese camps are only for girls. The activities in these camps are following the philosophy of the girl scouts, but it is not necessary that you have experience as a scout to work in one of these camps. Outdoor activities are the main focus in these camps so the facilities and conditions in these camps can be very primitive.Camps for underprivilegedEvery year social institutions and organisations give a lot of kids the opportunity of experiencing positive outdoor activities outside the tough neighbourhoods in the big cities, from where they come.Camps for physically challengedKids and adults with different handicaps are offered special facilities that make it possible for them to participate in a lot of varied activities at a camp. Also they get help for the personal care in the extent they need it.Camps for learning disabledKids and adults with learning disabilities are helped to reach their full potential. |
